A Sealed Sheet, Not a Sales Spec Sheet

Under the building code (IBC §1810.4.11, adopted in Massachusetts as part of 780 CMR), a registered design professional is required to establish the acceptance criteria for a helical pile foundation before installation begins — the pile type, shaft size, helix configuration, minimum depth, required final installation torque, maximum allowable torque, tolerances, and termination criteria. That is a structural engineering deliverable, not a sales spec sheet.

Most deck-scale installers hand the building official a manufacturer’s evaluation report and hope it holds up at plan review. We hand them a sealed sheet, sized for your site’s soil and loads, with the field torque verification built in.

Yes. Can helical piles be installed in winter or frozen ground?
Yes. Unlike sonotubes and poured concrete footings, which stop working once the ground freezes, helical piles install in frozen ground as reliably as they do in warmer months, since they’re mechanically screwed to depth rather than poured and cured.
Are helical piles allowed near wetlands or in a Conservation Commission buffer zone?
Helical piles are frequently the preferred low-disturbance foundation option when a resource area or buffer zone rules out excavation, since installation avoids wet concrete and large-scale digging near a wetland. Every site still needs its own Conservation Commission review; we prepare the wetland delineation and filing alongside the foundation design.
What’s the difference between a helical pile and a helical pier?
They’re the same technology — a steel shaft with helical plates rotated into the ground. “Pile” is the term used in engineering specs, geotechnical reports, and the building code; “pier” is the term more commonly used in residential and foundation-repair contexts. We design, verify, and stamp either.
